4 Common Roofing Mistakes To Avoid

When it comes to protecting your home from the natural elements outside, your roofing system is extremely important. This is because, without a sturdy roof, moisture, rain water, and more can make its way into your home, causing severe damage and other issues. In order to be sure that you have a sturdy roof at all times, you should be providing regular maintenance as well as avoiding these four common roofing mistakes that many homeowners make:

  1. Replacing Your Roof with No Warranty: If there comes a point in time when you need to replace the roof above your head, then you want to be sure that you hire a roofing company that will provide a warranty for the roofing work they provided. This ensures that, for a certain extended period of time, most repairs will be done under the protection of the warranty by the roofing company. This means that you won't have to pay for the repairs, which is an important way to save money and ensure that repairs are made for mistakes that the roofing company may have made during the original installation.
  2. Not Asking for an Estimate: Whether you need your roof replaced or you need some repairs to be done, you should always be asking for an estimate on the work. This is important because a written estimate will protect you in the end. If the roofing company charges much more than was original agreed upon by the written estimate, then you should be sure to fight against those charges.
  3. Covering up Old Shingles: When you lay down new shingles, it's important that you remove all the old shingles first. Many homeowners make the mistakes of laying the new shingles directly on top of the old shingles. However, this creates a problem because it leaves room for moisture, dirt, and debris to get easily trapped in between the two layers of shingles. This can then lead to more excessive wear and tear of the new shingles.
  4. Not Placing a Moisture Protection Layer: Directly underneath the shingles, you should have an additional moisture protection layer. This is a sheet that is placed on the roof, which then has the shingles laid on top of it. This extra moisture protection ensures that water can travel down off the roof instead of getting caught on the underside of the shingles.

By avoiding these common roofing mistakes that many homeowners make, you can be sure that your roofing system is durable and saves you more money in the long run due to less extensive damages that will require more repairs than necessary.

About Me

repairing and preventing roof rot on your eaves

When the gutter system on your roof doesn't work as it should, your house could sustain serious water damage. The roof should never be exposed to more moisture than it needs to be, so the gutters are designed to carry the water away from the roof. One thing that homeowners sometimes forget is the protective drip sheeting that covers the edge of the roof just above the gutter. This will lead to expedited roof rot along the eaves. Find out what you can do to put a stop to roof rot on your eaves and how to make repairs after it occurs here on my blog.
