Basic Tips For Choosing Roof Coating Materials

There are a lot of decisions that have to be made between you and the roofing contractor when you restore your roof. However, before you can make a final decision, it's imperative to understand the different variations in roof coating materials  and how they will work best for your home. Roof coating material options may seem daunting at first, but there things you should consider such as the overall shape of your roof and surrounding weather conditions. The information below provides some tips for choosing roof coating materials for your home.

Silicone Roof Coating Material

Polyurethane foam (SPF) roofing systems typically use silicone coating materials. This is because the silicone material is extremely absorbent. In addition, silicone roof coating materials work well in areas with extreme weather patterns because it's sturdy and durable. The silicone coating has a smooth surface when applied to SPF roofs and looks sleek and modern. The silicone roof coating material has low abrasion resistance, making it easy for dirt to gather on the surface, which is why it's not ideal for high traffic areas.

PVDF Roof Coating Material

The preferred roof coating material for low slope metal roof systems is PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride). The PVDF coating is added to metal roofs using water-based products. This coating material is created using dried film surface, which makes the surface appear smooth.  The good thing about this type of coating is that it's resistant to mold and dirt, in addition to being extremely reflective.

Acrylic Roof Coating Material

Acrylic roof coating materials are considered great for the environment. The materials used for the coating enables the roof of your home to keep cool, while protecting the roof surface from overexposure to UV rays. Acrylic roof coats are also cost saving, as the cooler roof surface aids in reducing the need to constantly run your HVAC system. The durability and elastomeric materials of the acrylic can also withstand most extreme weather conditions with temperature fluctuations.

Emulsion Roof Coating Material

The emulsion roof coating material is comprised of asphalt and colloidal clay water. This gives it a brown, dark gray, or black coloring. This is because of the mixture of ingredients and you can choose which color works best for your home. The emulsion coating is mostly used as an additional coating for added protection against weather related damage. This is due to the asphalt and modified bitumen, which strengthens the structure of your roof. In addition, it's also considered fire resistant.

The roof coating materials listed here are just some of the options available for your roof. If you are contemplating upgrading your roof, consider consulting with your contractor so they can help you select the best roof coating materials that will work for your home.

About Me

repairing and preventing roof rot on your eaves

When the gutter system on your roof doesn't work as it should, your house could sustain serious water damage. The roof should never be exposed to more moisture than it needs to be, so the gutters are designed to carry the water away from the roof. One thing that homeowners sometimes forget is the protective drip sheeting that covers the edge of the roof just above the gutter. This will lead to expedited roof rot along the eaves. Find out what you can do to put a stop to roof rot on your eaves and how to make repairs after it occurs here on my blog.
