Tips For Maintaining Your Roof This Summer

A house's roof is exposed to the elements year-round, so it is important to properly care for it if you want it to last as long as possible. This includes the summer months, when roofs need extra attention as they deal with the heat and summer weather. Luckily, properly maintaining your roof during the summer is not very difficult. Use the following tips to keep your roof in great shape this summer.

Schedule a Roof Inspection

As the temperatures begin to rise, it is in your best interest to contact a roofing contractor to schedule a roof inspection. During a roof inspection, all of the components of your roof will be looked at. If the roofing contractor discovers any problems, he or she will let you know so you can arrange to make repairs. In many areas, the summer months bring severe thunderstorms, so a roof inspection can ensure that your roof is in tip-top shape and not at risk for damage.

Clean Out Your Gutters

Many people do not realize that the gutter system in a home plays a big role is the overall health of the roof. It is very important for gutters to be clear and clean so that rainwater can flow off of the roof. If you have clogged gutters, a heavy rainstorm can leave water pooling on the roof, which can cause damage to your roof's shingles.

Get Trees Trimmed

Trees are a beautiful addition to the yard, and they can help shade a home and keep it cooler in the summer. But, overgrown trees can also pose a threat to your roof. If you have large trees near the perimeter of your house, make sure that you have the limbs trimmed back, so none of them are to close to your roof. The last thing you want is for a summer storm with high winds to snap off a tree branch and have it land on top of your roof.

Check Out Your Attic

It is a good idea to check your attic at the start of the summer to make sure that there is not excessive moisture that can damage the insulation of the interior components of your roof. It is also important to look at the ventilation screens to make sure that they are not blocked by any dirt or debris. Also look to see if there are any small cracks or gaps in the roof that can let water in.

About Me

repairing and preventing roof rot on your eaves

When the gutter system on your roof doesn't work as it should, your house could sustain serious water damage. The roof should never be exposed to more moisture than it needs to be, so the gutters are designed to carry the water away from the roof. One thing that homeowners sometimes forget is the protective drip sheeting that covers the edge of the roof just above the gutter. This will lead to expedited roof rot along the eaves. Find out what you can do to put a stop to roof rot on your eaves and how to make repairs after it occurs here on my blog.
